I was out walking the other day when I came across a group of cyclists. As they approached, the lead rider shouted out a command: “Line it up!” Instantly, the others adjusted and got into formation.
What struck me was this: they weren’t reacting to something they saw. They were responding to something they heard. That command gave them direction, even if they hadn’t noticed what was happening up ahead.
Not long after, another cyclist came up behind me and called out, “On your left!” I couldn’t see him coming. The bike was nearly silent. But because I heard him, I knew how to move.
That’s when the Lord reminded me of something powerful: in the Kingdom of God, hearing is often greater than seeing.
Faith Comes by Hearing
Scripture tells us plainly:
“So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
—Romans 10:17 (NKJV)
Our faith isn’t built on what we see—it’s built on what we hear. Sight can be misleading. Circumstances can look impossible. But God’s Word cuts through all of that.
When we hear His voice, it gives us the clarity and direction that sight alone cannot.
Hearing Becomes Vision
Think about those cyclists again. Some may not have noticed the riders coming. But when they heard the command “line it up”—they suddenly had vision. They knew what to do, where to go, and how to stay safe.
That’s exactly how it works in our walk with God. When we hear His Word—really hear it, not just let it brush past our ears—we gain spiritual sight. His promises, His commands, and His truth guide us even when our natural eyes can’t see what He’s doing.
Trusting God’s Voice Over Our Eyes
Jesus told Thomas:
“Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
—John 20:29 (NKJV)
That’s the essence of walking by faith. We don’t obey because everything looks favorable. We obey because God has spoken.
Like a cyclist shouting “On your left!”—His Word alerts us, directs us, and protects us.
Final Thought
In the Kingdom of God, hearing is seeing. To the degree that we hear His Word, that’s the degree we gain spiritual vision.
So if you feel like you can’t see the way forward, maybe it’s time to focus less on what your eyes tell you—and more on what your ears are tuned to. Because the more clearly you hear Him, the more clearly you’ll see.
